About Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC)

What is the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program?

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created the EITC Program to stimulate giving to innovative educational organizations. Qualified businesses can earn significant tax credits equal to 75% – 90% of its contributions to approved Educational Improvement Organizations. WHYY is approved as an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO) and is eligible to receive EITC contributions for WHYY Media Labs, WHYY Afterschool, WHYY Film Academy, WHYY Young Journalists Camps, and WHYY Spring Break Journalism Camp.

Does my business qualify?

If you are unsure if your business qualifies for EITC, you can reach out to your accountant or the PA Department of Community and Economic Development. Businesses in Pennsylvania that pay any of the following taxes are eligible to apply for EITC credits:

  • Personal Income Tax
  • Capital Stock/Foreign Franchise Tax

  • Bank Shares Tax
  • Title Insurance & Trust Company Shares Tax
  • Insurance Premium Tax (excluding surplus lines, unauthorized, domestic/foreign marine)

What are WHYY’s EITC Approved Programs?

WHYY is renowned for the educational kids programs broadcast on TV, but when it comes to supporting kids as they grow up, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. WHYY’s education initiatives support children and their parents, teachers, and other adults who care for them. We offer free lesson plans, hands-on media arts training at WHYY’s Philadelphia Studios, and more. Our signature program, WHYY Media Labs, is a partnership with 49 schools across Philadelphia that brings equipment and instruction to thousands of students each year.

WHYY Summer Camps, another EITC-approved program, offers intensive multi-week experiences for students finishing grades 6-12 as well as WHYY’s Spring Break Journalism camp, specifically for middle school students. The project-based programs provide immersive media-production experiences in which the participants work in teams to create original news or film productions in news.
